Poetry
ACCEPTED by Allison Wiesieke
A poem about that next phase in life.
The fluttering feeling was undeniable.
Frightening,
and deafening.
All my feelings coinciding into one.
The comforting, secure stick,
that soft plush shelter,
is being ripped from my very own skin.
Something I’ve known all my life,
temporarily gone
all for something
utterly foreign.
Brand- spanking new.
Fresh out the oven,
I’m new meat. A chicken.
figuratively and literally.
I’m going to be swallowed up by a sea of strangers,
while being impaled with alien information.
Probed profusely, being put into containment,
captured. abducted.
All too fast,
all too soon,
all too quick.
FOR A MAN by Joey Cornwall
For a man
He sits there
A different home each night
Pours a glass of bourbon down his aorta
For a man
His head gets smaller, after another failure
Of a night
For a man
Going to Atlanta
When he should be in Kalamazoo
Oh how it is such a dread
For a man
To have a heart as his head
NOT GOOD ENOUGH: A Slam poem by Jasper Olsen
To be read aloud, by two people.
This is an open letter to my brain.
Dear brain,
What the hell?!
I’m trying to finish my homework, this isn’t the end of the world.
How many people have you seen today?
exactly how many of them hate you?
ALL OF THEM
NONE OF THEM. none of them hate you.
But what if that one hates you?
he’s literally one of my favorite people. he doesn’t hate me.
but he didn’t text you back. this whole week.
like I said, what the hell?!
This is what life is like. everything I say or do, this asshole second guesses me. and I trust her more than most things. i can’t do anything well enough for her to leave me alone.
should you really have said that? are you giving off the wrong impression?
this is my poem, not yours.
let me do what needs to get done, without telling me it isn’t good enough, without telling me to start over a hundred times because it isn’t good enough, because it’s wrong, because…
you don’t really look like a guy. you dont sound like a guy when you talk
i know. ...what does that even have to do with anything?
my mind tells me that im
Not good enough
Do that again,
again.
Not good enough
AGAIN.
STOP.
Oh my, now they’re all looking at you.
BLIND ONE by Emilio Garcia
My heart is set but my mind is broken. It's a reverse situation but I know it's for certain.
I love you but I want you to fall.
Crash burn feel what I feel.
Look behind me you'll only see darkness
a world that was created by being so heartless.
Can you see the pain it's hidden in my smile!
I struggle to my feet with every word you send to my defeat.
I stagger up with the love in my heart and God tearing the darkness apart.
I stare right at you with a single thought.
Is the one you worship who he proclaims to be
for the one I look to says you're ruining me!
Open your eyes.
Words and hate engulfing the flames that purify me!
A single word from a twisted tongue!
WEAK! The Devil works in you!
This poem was inspired by experiences in a past life and by the song "Still Born" by Currents
THE LUXURIES by Cassandra Pockat
" It's just a feeling
a dream that I had.
I dreamt.
the closing of a book.
And when will it stop?
Do we deserve this?
Are you afraid?
I don't know
I suppose that's the trouble,
I don't know.
the luxury
That's something to be proud of, like always.
Just the little things
watch the tv
listen to the radio
put the children to bed
something to be proud of.
Goodnight. "
This is a poem that I wrote in my AP Prep English class. It is a poem written from excerpts taken from a short story written by Ray Bradbury, called, "The Last Night of the World." I wanted to use this story because Ray Bradbury is one of my favorite authors and I always try to practice the idea of being proud of the small things in life, like Bradbury's story illustrated.
THE SIMPLICITY OF A SMILE by Charlie Dennert
Sometimes we do not realize
What the little things can do
We do not always realize
that The little things help too
So many times we walk along
No friendly face to see
And a smile from a stranger
Will rarely come to be
A smile, yes a smile
Can wipe away one's strife
Just a simple little smile
Can change somebody's life
So smile at the sunshine
And smile at the rain
Because all that comes out of a smile
Is someone else's gain
So go and try this little thing
And Try it for a while
And maybe we'll all realize
The simplicity of a smile
A NEW ERA by Jess Burr
I am nearing a new era in life
According to the Chinese I am going to prosper in the next year
Though it is more of a small leak than a flood
I have been given a one way ticket
And once I accept it and leave for the journey
There is no way to go back
Some look forward to this journey their whole life
While I feel as though I have eaten the skin of a plum
There are good parts
But there are also bad parts
There are many uncertain parts
But that is why life Is considered an adventure
I AM FOR ME. by Elizabeth Sandoval
I’m a clear image in a dark room,
The first giggle after a loss,
A one way ticket to anywhere and everywhere.
A kept secret warming you in the winter.
These clouds will scatter as my sunshine breaks through.
Fresh water pours from this reservoir.
I’ve been in a hurricane too long,
These lights broken,
This room decrepit.
DEAD GRACE by Mira Kwiecen
And so I shall let death take me
And smite me or so for mistake me
To say a farewell would be lies
A family to see soon in skies
A man in white, a girl in black
With all her sins upon her back
Grace of light upon her head
She is surrounded by the dead
As mother and father they weep
The little girl lies down to sleep
A saint forever she's raised
And down on earth she'll be praised
I chose the elegy because it is a beautiful form that is expressive in explaining an unpleasant and saddening topic. I used metaphors and dark/light imagery to really give off the true essence of death. The tone of the poem started out very dark and eventually changed to light for the rest of the poem. The imagery and metaphors are very effective because they truly portray the way that death looks upon the world.
